WELCH'S

In 1869 Thomas Bramwell Welch set out to develop an "unfermented wine" for use in his church's communion services.  His confidence in the outcome had been inspired by Louis Pasteur's discovery of the pasteurization process for milk. Welch began with grape juice, exactly as though he were about to amen wine. But rather than lay the bottles aside to ferment, he lowered them into boiling water long enough to kill the yeast organisms - just as Pasteur had done with milk. Weeks went by, and when the bottles were finally opened, they were found to contain a sweet grape juice without a hint of fermentation. On September 24, 1869 the Welch Grape Juice Co. was established in Vineland, New Jersey, and the drink was distributed commercially.

In 1872 Welch's son took over the family grape juice business.  In 1896 he moved to western New York's grape-growing region, and the following year he established company headquarters at Westfield, New York.

When Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan served Welch's Grape Juice at a diplomatic dinner, the refreshing juice became know as a substitute for alcoholic drinks. The Company's line of products soon expanded to include jams and jellies as well as other grape products. Today the company employees more than 1,200 people in six plants ind a is now headquartered in Concord, Massachusetts, where the original Concord grape was developed by Ephraim Wales Bull.

PEPSI-COLA

It was 1891 and 31-year-old Caleb Bradham, the owner of a small pharmacy New Bern, North Carolina, was enjoying great success because he had discovered that by creating superior-tasting, thirst-quenching drinks, he could profit from the tendency of his customers to socialize at his soda fountain. Of all the unique beverages he created, the favorite of his customers was concocted of cola nut extract, vanilla and exotic oils.  They called it "Brad's Drink" but "Brad" was already calling it Pepsi-Cola.

The drink's popularity steadily grew, and on June 16, 1903 the United State Patent Office issued Bradham a registration for what would become one of the world's most famous trademarks: Pepsi-Cola. The first advertising slogan "Drink Pepsi-Cola, Delicious, Healthful, 5 Cents" was inscribed in the trademark.

Several advertising slogans would subsequently characterize Pepsi-Cola over the years; many are nationally acclaimed, a few made advertising history. With the debut of the Pepsi Generation in the 1960s, America's baby boom had a name, and Pepsi-Cola had one of its most enduring recognized ad campaigns of all time.  Today, Pepsi-Cola, the Choice of A New Generation, is an industry leader with more than three billion customers all over the world.

PEPSI-COLA, PEPSI, PEPSI GENERATION, and THE CHOICE OF A NEW GENERATION are trademarks of PepsiCo, Inc.  PEPSI-COLA is used with the permission of PepsiCo, Inc.

DR PEPPER

It was during the late 1800s in Virginia that a young pharmacy employee fell in love with his employer's daughter, a Miss Pepper. However, he was a mere soda-fountain worker, and his employer, a doctor, fired him to end the romance.

The young man went to Waco, Texas, landed another soda-fountain job and mixed new flavors to take his mind off his lost love. One mixture proved quite popular with the fountain's patrons and was promptly dubbed "Dr. Pepper" after the stern father who had thwarted Cupid.

A regular customer at the soda fountain was R.S. Lazenby, a beverage chemist who saw great promise in the new soft drink flavor. Lazenby spent two years testing, blending and experimenting, and on December 1, 1885 in Waco he formed a new company to put Dr. Pepper on sale commercially. To this day, the formula for his soft drink remained basically unchanged. But popularity in Waco, Texas is a long way from national fame, so in 1891 Lazenby and his associate W.B. Morrison commissioned an artist, Nellie Kellner, to produce a trademark.  The resulting "Wheat and Iron" logo was used for years before it was replaced by the name of the product in script with an underline reading King of Beverages. Numerous variations on the theme followed, supported by national advertising. Some logos including a depiction of a reclining lion, the king of beasts.
